Start of the referendum to amend the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan

Since early morning the IPA CIS observers have been monitoring the voting at the polling stations in Baku and other regions.

The citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan over the age of 18 are eligible to take part in the referendum. According to the records of the CEC of Azerbaijan, the number of the citizens possessing active electoral rights amounts to 5.3 million people.

The CEC established 125 district and 5548 precinct commissions in order to carry out the referendum on 26 September.

Ilyas Umahanov, Vice Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and Head of IPA observation mission, shared his views with the press: "The excellent arrangements were made to organize this referendum. Azerbaijan surely managed not only to comply with the highest standards of democracy proclaimed by the Council of Europe and other international organizations, but also take care of its citizens while preparing the referendum."
 
Alexey Sergeev, Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council and member of IPA CIS observation mission, visited the polling station at the Consulate General of the Republic of Azerbaijan in St. Petersburg. 

In an interview, Alexey Sergeev spoke on the work of the observers in Baku and other regions, a series of meetings with the country's leadership and action groups as well as voting process in Moscow.
