IPA CIS Model Laws on Environmental Protection Discussed at Conference on Cooperation in Arctic

The VIII International Research and Practical Conference “Polar Bear Universe: Effective Cooperation in the Arctic” organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Chukotka Autonomous District took place in Moscow.

The conference is a landmark event in the field of comprehensive study, conservation and utilization of the resource potential of Arctic ecosystems.

The conference discussed the issues of scientific and production support for socio-economic development, as well as environmental and technospheric safety in the Arctic.

Secretary of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Agrarian Policy, Natural Resources and Ecology Natalia Amburtseva took part in the event on behalf of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly.

She spoke about a number of model documents aimed at unifying the legislation of the CIS countries to ensure guarantees of environmental protection and vital interests of the population from the negative impact of economic and other activities. She emphasized that the provisions and basic concepts of the model documents should be applied to the Arctic region and the Arctic states - the region is characterised by a high vulnerability of the natural environment to anthropogenic impact and a slow recovery rate of disturbed natural ecosystems and landscapes.
