44th IPA CIS plenary session ends its deliberations

The dynamics of global developments raises the bar for parliamentary diplomacy, said IPA CIS Chairperson at the opening of the 44th session.

She noted that the international dimension of the IPA CIS seeks mutually beneficial cooperation with such partners as IPU which provided the status of an associate member to the IPA CIS, and the parliamentary assemblies of the Council of Europe, OSCE and BSEC.

"IPA CIS is open for cooperation with all national parliaments and inter-parliamentary organizations and we look forward to developing this cooperation", said Valentina Matvienko.

Valentina Matvienko mentioned the key vectors of the work done by the IPA CIS and concluded that its efforts stick to and remain in full compliance with plans. She focused on the election monitoring as a major line of the Assembly's activities.

"The meeting of the IPA CIS Council which had taken place the day before heard reports on the successful election observation missions in Armenia and Kazakhstan, as well as on the preparation of the monitoring of the referendum on constitutional amendments in Tajikistan on 22 May".

Valentina Matvienko also shared that the Council had considered the issues of the role of the Regional Commonwealth in the Field of Communications in building a legal framework in the IT field across the CIS; cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development; and the model law-making role of the IPA CIS Board of Experts on Public Health. The Council also heard information on publishing the IPA CIS Research Magazine Dialogue: Politics, Law, Economics. The Council discussed activities related to the Year of Education in the CIS, drew the outcomes of the Assembly's work in the previous year and considered some housekeeping issues.

The Assembly demonstrated sustainable results and, generally, positive outcomes, said Valentina Matvienko.

Speaking about the outcomes of the Spring Session, IPA CIS Secretary General Alexey Sergeev noted that the Assembly had had an efficient and a fruitful session.

"This time the Assembly was attended by many guests from international parliamentary organizations. Therefore, certain discussions were focused on international agenda and inter-parliamentary cooperation.
