IPA CIS and CSTO PA delegations participate in mourning ceremony at Piskarevskoe Memorial Cemetery

Every year thousands of St. Petersburg residents gather at the Piskarevskoe Memorial Cemetery in order to commemorate those deceased in the besieged city during the Great Patriotic War. On the eve of the 75th anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the fascist siege, the delegations of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly and the Parliamentary Assembly of the CSTO traditionally joined the residents of the city at the mourning ceremony.

Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko joined the ceremony. Answering the questions of journalists, she mentioned that 27 January was a holy day for residents of Leningrad/St. Petersburg. The IPA CIS Council Chairperson said she greatly appreciated those people, who had not only survived bombardments, but had also been fighting, working and defending the city.

On behalf of the IPA CIS the ceremony was attended by Secretary General – Head of the IPA CIS Council Secretariat Yury Osipov and his deputies: Plenipotentiary Representative of the Milli Mejlis of the Azerbaijan Republic Aidyn Jafarov, Deputy Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council – Plenipotentiary Representative of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Hayk Chilingaryan, Deputy Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council – Plenipotentiary Representative of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrghyz Republic Nurbek Satvaldiev, Plenipotentiary Representative of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova Ion Lipciu, and Plenipotentiary Representative of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan Ibod Rakhimov.

The CSTO PA delegation was led by Executive Secretary – Head of the CSTO PA Secretariat Petr Ryabukhin. The event was also attended by his deputies: Plenipotentiary Representative of the Parliaments of the Republic of Kazakhstan Viktor Rogalyov and Plenipotentiary Representative of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Andrei Kudryavtsev.

The siege of Leningrad began on 8 September 1941 and lasted for 872 days. On 18 January 1943 the siege was lifted, however, it was only 27 January 1944 when the city was completely liberated.
