Sergey Mironov: "IPA CIS confirmed its relevance and importance having reached the the 25th anniversary milestone"

05 June 2017

Sergey Mironov:

Sergey Mironov, Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council in 2002-2011, shared on his experience at the helm of the Assembly and spoke on the history and role of the IPA CIS and its organs.

He underscored the importance of model law-making and the role of model laws and codes in helping states to adapt to new conditions.

Sergey Mironov also spoke about the creation of IIMDD IPA CIS and its efforts to provide election assessment, as an alternative to the observers of OSCE PA and PACE.

He stressed the role of the IPA CIS as a forum that had been extensively used by leaders of post-soviet republics to discuss pressing issues and find consensus on many matters of mutual importance. He also mentioned the role of the Caucasian Four, active during his chairmanship, in addressing regional issues.

"Having reached the 25th anniversary milestone, the IPA CIS confirmed its relevance and importance. The CIS Assembly was at the origin of the interparliamentary movement. We are seeing progress, as new similar structures emerge today, yet we still need this fundamental parliamentary body".

Speakers of parliament are more open to dialogue and change representing voters – the people of our countries. Our practices have shown that this work provides a ground for decision-making by heads of state. The future ahead is quite positive.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of you on the 25th anniversary of the IPA CIS. 25 years is an important date, yet it is only the beginning. May I wish success to the IPA CIS and years of further progress of this wonderful parliamentary international organization.
