Valentina Matvienko: “We hope our Uzbek colleagues will join the IPA CIS as observers, as a first step”

Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko he met with Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Nigmatilla Yuldashev.

Valentina Matvienko noted a significant momentum in the development of Russian-Uzbek parliamentary ties in the last two years. She expressed confidence that legislators could play an important role in boosting intergovernmental cooperation further.

The IPA CIS Council Chairperson also suggested stepping up the efforts to coordinate legislative initiatives within international platforms. “We hope our Uzbek counterparts join the IPA CIS as observers, as a first step”, she noted.

Valentina Matvienko noted the scope of inter-parliamentary interaction covering political, economic, cultural and humanitarian, educational and investment cooperation, as well as tourism and sport.

Nigmatilla Yuldashev noted that thanks to the leaders of both countries Russian-Uzbek relations have evolved into a strategic partnership and an alliance. “Comprehensive development of mutually beneficial relations with Russia is a high priority for Uzbekistan”.

Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan also underlined the importance of strengthening the links between the Senate of the Oliy Majlis and the Federation Council.

During the meeting the parties signed the Cooperation Agreement between the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
