Chingiz Aitmatov Monument to Appear in St. Petersburg

Plenipotentiary Representative of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic at the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly Nurbek Satvaldiev appealed to St. Petersburg parliamentarians with a request to support the idea of installing a monument to outstanding Kyrgyz writer Chingiz Aitmatov in the Russian northern capital.
The Representative of the Kyrgyz parliament spoke about the initiative to memorialize the classic of literature in this way on 20 December at a meeting in the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, which brought together the representatives of international parliamentary organizations and heads of consular institutions.
The monument is proposed to be installed in the park of the Kalininsky district of St. Petersburg, named after Chingiz Aitmatov in 2013. Earlier, the idea was supported by the Kyrgyz diaspora.
The Plenipotentiary representative of the Jogorku Kenesh asked for the assistance of the St. Petersburg parliamentarians in preparing the documentation necessary for the installation of the sculpture.
The 95th anniversary of Chingiz Aitmatov’s birth will be celebrated next year. International conferences and other events dedicated to the work of the Kyrgyz writer are planned in Bishkek, his homeland, and on the banks of the Neva River.
