Interaction Between MPs on Counter-Terrorism Issues Discussed in Istanbul

On 8 May, the Fifth Counter-Terrorism Coordination Meeting of Parliamentary Assemblies kicked off in Istanbul, where the roles of parliamentary assemblies and parliaments in this area were discussed.

The meeting featured reports on countering terrorism in the Sahel (Africa), Latin America, the Black Sea region and the Middle East. The participants were also presented with a Parliamentary Handbook based on the provisions of the United Nations Security Council resolution 1373 of 2001.

Member of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Political Issues and International Cooperation Grigory Karasin spoke on behalf of the IPA CIS. He noted the IPA CIS activities in the field of counter-terrorism. In total, the IPA CIS has adopted 125 model laws on this topic.

The parliamentarian also spoke about the documents being developed today. Among them are the Model Law on Countering the Use of Autonomous and Robotic Systems for Terrorist and Extremist Purposes, Recommendations on the Improving of Legal Regulation in the Field of Suppression of Illegal Activities in the Waters of the Commonwealth countries, Recommendations on the Implementation of Administrative and Legal Measures of Authorities in the Field of Anti-Terrorist Security of the CIS Member Nations.

Grigory Karasin called for the joint efforts of the parliamentary assemblies in order to contribute to countering international terrorism in any of its manifestations in cooperation with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT).
