Parliamentarians’ Counter-Terrorism Potential Highlighted at Conference in Vienna

On 4 October 2023, the Fourth Counter-Terrorism Coordination Meeting of Parliamentary Assemblies began its work in Vienna, Republic of Austria.

The Programme Office of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism in partnership with international and parliamentary assemblies, as well as in cooperation with other UN entries and international organizations, implements the Global Programme on Parliamentary Engagement in Preventing and Countering Terrorism.

President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Duarte Pacheco, Director of the UN Counter-Terrorism Center Mauro Miedico, Director Political Affairs Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs of Austria H.E. Ambassador Gregor W. Koessler , OSCE Vice-President and Chair of the Ad Hoc Committee of the OSCE Parliamentary Assemble on Countering Terrorism Reinhold Lopatka made welcoming speeches.

On behalf of the IPA CIS Secretariat , Head of the Expert and Analytical Directorate Denis Zhuk and Head of the Department for International Relations, Secretary of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Political Issues and International Cooperation Maksimillian Selyutin took part in the event.

The Meeting of Parliamentary Assemblies is aimed to support and enhance the capacity of parliamentarians worldwide in counter-terrorism efforts, to increase the contribution of parliaments to the development and realization of counter-terrorism legislation, as well as to support parliaments in implementing the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and relevant UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.

The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) Programme Office on Parliamentary Engagement in Preventing and Countering Terrorism was established with the support of the Shura Council of the State of Qatar in November 2020, and officially launched in June 2021.
