Role of Women’s Leadership in Fight Against Climate Change Discussed at Annual IPU-UN Women Parliamentary Meeting

The online discussion “The Role of Women’s Leadership and Gender-Responsive Parliaments in Climate Action”, co-organized by the IPU and UN Women as part of the 66th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, took place on 14 March 2022.

Member of the Shura Council of the Kingdom of Bahrain, First Vice-President of the IPU Bureau of Women Parliamentarians Hala Ramzi Fayez moderated the event. IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong and Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, Deputy Executive Director of UN Women Asa Regner delivered the welcoming speeches.

The two thematic sessions were attended by MPs, representative of the UN specialized agencies, international parliaments and public organizations. Adviser of the Department for International Relations of the IPA CIS Council Secretariat Maria Tikhotskaya represented the organization at the event as an observer.

During the meeting, the MPs shared parliamentary best practices in the fields of climate change response, building an inclusive green economy, integrated green approaches to recovery measures from the COVID-19 pandemic that would take into account gender issues. The participants of the event highlighted the close links between climate change policies and gender equality, in particular the role of women in sustainable agriculture, sustainable consumption and environmental education.
