Armenia Celebrates Day of First Republic
28 May 2024
Today, the Republic of Armenia celebrates the day of the sovereignty restoration. On 28 May 1918, the Armenian National Council in Tiflis declared the independence of the Republic of Armenia with the capital in Yerevan.
The establishment of the Republic of Armenia marked the restoration of Armenian statehood almost six centuries after the fall of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia.
The independent Armenian state lasted until 2 December 1920.
In the modern Republic of Armenia, 28 May is a public holiday and an official day off.
