IPA CIS Council Met in Uzbekistan for First Time

On 27 October , the heads of the parliamentary delegations of the CIS Member Nations held the meeting of the IPA CIS Council in Samarkand. The meeting noted the significance and importance of developing inter-parliamentary cooperation in the region.

The event was attended by Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko, Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Azerbaijan Republic Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Alen Simonyan, Speaker of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Natalia Kochanova, Speaker of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Maulen Ashimbayev, Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic Nurlanbek Shakiev, Speaker of the Majlisi namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan Mahmadtoir Zokirzoda, Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva,Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Mazhilis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Nurdinjon Ismoilov and Speaker of the Mejlis of the Milli Gengesh of Turkmenistan Gulshat Mammedova.

The event was also attended by Chair of the Committee of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security, Chair of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Political Issues and International Cooperation Aigul Kuspan, Chair of the Committee of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on Issues of the Commonwealth of Independent States and Contacts with Fellow Countrymen Leonid Kalashnikov, IPA CIS Council Secretary General Dmitriy Kobitskiy and Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee – CIS Executive Secretary Beketzhan Zhumakhanov.

The Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council expressed gratitude on behalf of the heads and members of the parliamentary delegations, who arrived at the session of the IPA CIS in Samarkand, to the hospitable hosts – President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev for the invitation, the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan and personally its Speaker Tanzila Narbaeva – for the high level of organization of the events.

The heads of parliamentary delegations unanimously voted for the re-election of Valentina Matvienko as the head of the IPA CIS Council.

The participants of the meeting were informed about the decisions of the Council of the CIS Heads of State, which was held on 15 October 2022.

The parliamentarians reviewed the outcomes of the monitoring of the republican constitutional referendum in Kazakhstan, which was held this June. International observers from the IPA CIS recognized the referendum as compliant with the national legislation and international commitments of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the electoral sphere.

The heads of the parliamentary delegations also discussed the practice of holding the CIS youth inter-parliamentary forums. The forum “Young Parliamentarians —  Looking into the Future of the Commonwealth” held this June showed the interest of young politicians in cooperation, communication, exchange of information and experience.

The members of the Council also got acquainted with the results of the forum “Commonwealth of Fashion”, held a few days ago, which brought together professionals in the field of light and fashion industry, representatives of relevant ministries and business associations, educational institutions and the creative sector from the Commonwealth countries. The heads of parliaments recognized its prospects – it was decided to hold the forum on a regular basis.

The heads of the parliamentary delegations decided to establish the IPA CIS Expert Advisory Board on Ecology and Environmental Management. The Expert Advisory Board will provide scientific support of the work of the relevant commission, provide it with advisory and informational assistance, ensure interaction with academic institutions of the Commonwealth countries to improve the model legislative framework of the Assembly.
