2 February – Victory Day in Battle of Stalingrad

The Battle of Stalingrad ended on 2 February 1943 .

The defense of the city lasted 200 days and nights. Stalingrad was virtually wiped off the face of the earth, yet it became a symbol of a turning point in the war and of unbreakable resilience.

On this day, mourning and solemn events are held in Volgograd, attended bycitizens of the Commonwealth countries . They lay flowers at the Eternal Flame on Mamayev Kurgan, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, at the Small Mass Grave, as well as at memorial steles dedicated to the courage and heroism of natives of the Soviet republics who fell in the Battle.

The Battle of Stalingrad became one of the greatest tragedies of the Great Patriotic War and, and at the same time, a symbol of heroism and an unbroken spirit. Representatives of all the Soviet republics defended the city on the Volga, and the memory of their feat remains shared by all the peoples of the Commonwealth.
