Armenian Parliamentarians Laid Wreaths at Eternal Flame of Glory Memorial

The wreath-laying ceremony in Veliky Novgorod was attended by members of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Vahe Ghalumyan and Aleksey Sandikov, as well as Deputy Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council – Plenipotentiary Representative of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Hayk Chilingaryan.
The “Eternal Flame of Glory Memorial Complex” is located on the grounds of the Novgorod Kremlin. It was unveiled on 8 May 1965 to mark the 20th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The flame for the memorial was brought from Leningrad and lit from the Eternal Flame at the Field of Mars.
The memorial was erected at the site of two adjoining communal graves. Buried there are Soviet soldiers of the 59th Army who fell during the liberation of Novgorod in 1944, as well as participants in the revolutionary movement.
The granite memorial slab bears the words of front-line writer Daniil Granin: “The foundation of life is the courage of the people, and its immortality lies in its deeds.”
From 18 to 20 September, representatives of Armenia, as members of the IPA CIS international observation group, monitored the elections to the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation. As part of their work, they visited Veliky Novgorod, where they observed the voting process at polling stations.
