Heads of IPA CIS Parliamentary Delegations to Take Part in International Parliamentary Conference Global Challenges and Threats in Context of COVID-19

On 15 April 2021, the Interparliamentary Assembly of Member Nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism will hold an online international parliamentary conference “Global Threats and Challenges in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Terrorism and Violent Extremism”.

For the first time since the announcement of the COVID-19 pandemic, the heads of parliamentary delegations to the Assembly will take part in the event in person: Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko, Speaker of the Milli Mejlis of the Azerbaijan Republic Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan, Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic Talant Mamytov, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova Zinaida Greceanii and Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva. Speaker of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Natalya Kochanova will join the event via videoconferencing.

Attendees will also include: Deputy Speaker of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurlan Abdirov, Joint Chiefs of Security and Special Services of the CIS Member Nations, Director of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation Alexander Bortnikov, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Hendrik Daems (via videoconferencing), Chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Countering Terrorism of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Reinhold Lopatka (via videoconferencing), Chairperson of the Executive Committee –  CIS Executive Secretary Sergey Lebedev, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Ghada Fathy Waly (via videoconferencing), President of the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference Pyry Niemi (via videoconferencing), Secretary General of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) Jürgen Stock (via videoconferencing), Head of the Commonwealth of Independent States Anti-Terrorism Center Andrey Novikov (via videoconferencing), representatives of other international organizations, academia and experts.

The Conference will begin with a plenary session and will continue in the framework of the thematic sessions: “Legal Mechanisms of International Co-operation in Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism”, “Assessing the Terrorist Threat and Efforts to Prevent Violent Extremism”, “Promoting and Protecting the Rights of Victims of Terrorism and Addressing Their Needs” and “Democracies Facing the COVID-19 Pandemic”.
