IPA CIS Council Members Participate in 5th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament

On 19-20 August 2020, the 5th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament under the overall theme of “Parliamentary leadership for more effective multilateralism that delivers peace and sustainable development for the people and planet” took place in Vienna via videoconferencing. The event organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in cooperation with the Parliament of the Republic of Austria and the United Nations brought together over 200 MPs from around the world.

Speaker of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. In his video message to the participants of the event, he noted that the complexity and contradictory nature of the processes taking place in the world, the growing lack of trust bring forward the need for more active participation of parliamentarians in ensuring peace, harmony and sustainable development. “The solution of this problem is possible only through the dialogue and mutual understanding, mutually beneficial trade and economic relations, ensuring equal access for all states to the advanced achievements of science and technology”, stressed Vladimir Andreichenko.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly called on fellow speakers to support unification initiatives aimed at achieving the above-mentioned goals.

President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Gabriela Cuevas, President of the Austrian National Council Wolfgang Sobotka, Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres also addressed the participants at the opening ceremony.

On the same day, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova Zinaida Greceanii made a presentation “People’s Mobility: Challenges, Opportunities and Solutions” and told the participants about labor migration and the policy of the Moldovan authorities for the effective management of migration processes and the return of citizens.

According to the press service of the Parliament, the Speaker commended the authorities and the peoples of the countries where Moldovan citizens lived and worked, as well as called on the international community for closer cooperation in the field of migration. “Our common goal is to create conditions under which citizens would want and be able to return home”, summed up Zinaida Greceanii.

Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan touched upon the issue of combating terrorism and violent extremism. He noted that the National Assembly attached great importance to expanding multilateral international cooperation in this area and consistently advocated the full implementation of the relevant UN conventions and other international legal instruments aimed at ensuring global security.

The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan was represented at the conference by Speaker Nurdinjon Ismoilov. According to the press service of the Chamber, the Republic commended the significance of the event, which gave MPs from different countries the opportunity to exchange views on ensuring peace and sustainable development for the people and the planet.

The 5th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament was also attended by Deputy Speakers of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Galina Karelova and Iliyas Umakhanov and Chairman of the Committee of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachev. The State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation was represented at the event by Chairman of the Committee on Health Protection Dmitrii Morozov.
