Igor Sergeenko was Elected as Speaker of House of Representatives of National Assembly of Belarus

The meeting of the first session of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus of the eighth convocation was opened.

By secret ballot deputies elected Igor Sergeenko as the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus. Previously he served as the Head of the Belarus President Administration.

Vadim Ipatov, who headed the National Center for Legislation and Legal Research of the Republic of Belarus before, was elected as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.

During the meeting fourteen standing commissions of the House of Representatives were formed.

Parliamentary elections of the House of Representatives of the eighth convocation were held on 25 February. 20 deputies of the House of Representatives of the seventh convocation were re-elected. 37 women received deputy mandates. 70 MPs are members of political parties, 40 are non-party members.

The day before by Decree of President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko a number of deputies and senators were awarded for their fruitful activities and significant personal contribution to the development of legislation and parliamentarism. Former Speaker of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko was awarded the 1st degree Order of the Fatherland.

The IPA CIS International Observers Group monitored parliamentary elections to the lower house of the Belarusian parliament. In the final conclusion, the parliamentary elections in Belarus were held in compliance with the rights and freedoms of all participants in the electoral process, in accordance with the national legislation and the international obligations of the Republic of Belarus.
