International Day of Democracy
15 September 2021
International Day of Democracy was established through a resolution of the UN General Assembly in 2007 and is celebrated on 15 September. The date coincides with the 20th anniversary of the first international conference of new and restored democracies that was celebrated in 2008.
The International Day of Democracy reminds that the democracy is the expression of people’s interest and is based on the inclusivity, equality and equal participation and is one of the key elements for ensuring peace, sustainable development and human rights.
Various awareness-raising activities, including lectures, seminars and roundtables on democracy-related issues are held throughout the world this day.
