Kazakhstan Holds Elections to Senate of Parliament

The Central Election Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan (CEC) published the final results of the Senate elections held on 14January. The elections took place in all the regions of the country – 17 regions and three cities of national significance: Astana, Almaty and Shymkent.
The CEC head noted that the elections were highly competitive – on average, one seat in the Senate claimed more than six people. Out of 130 nominated candidates, 55 candidates were registered. The majority of candidates were self-nominated. Of the 20 elected senators, three are women. The average age of the elected deputies is 50,3 years, according to the CEC.
The upper house of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan has a total of 49 members. Half of elected members of the Senate are up for election every three years.
