Meetings of Speakers of Parliaments of Russia and Uzbekistan Took Place in Moscow

On 5 July, Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko and Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Mazhilis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Nurdinjon Ismoilov discussed issues of inter-parliamentary cooperation at a meeting held in Moscow. The Uzbek representatives put forward the initiative to hold a visiting session of the IPA CIS on 27-28 October 2022 in Tashkent. This initiative was highly appreciated.

During the meeting, Valentina Matvienko noted that the parliamentary dialogue between Russia and Uzbekistan remains constructive and friendly.

“The development of parliamentary diplomacy has become a priority field of cooperation between Russia and Uzbekistan, complementing the ties between the Heads of State and Government. It is important for us that a solid legal framework, numbering about 350 documents, has been created between Russia and Uzbekistan”, the Speaker of the Federation Council underlined.

Valentina Matvienko focused on the constructive partnership at key international and regional platforms, as well as on the new parliamentary dialogue mechanism in the format of “Central Asia + Russia”.

She reminded that this year the parliamentary work was marked by the 30th anniversary of the IPA CIS.

Nurdinjon Ismoilov noted the progressive development of Russian-Uzbek relations, as well as significant results achieved in a wide range of interaction. The parties underlined the importance of parliamentary control over the implementation of previously reached interstate agreements in the trade, economy and investment fields.

On the same day, Nurdinjon Ismoilov met with Speaker of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Volodin.

Vyacheslav Volodin underlined that Russia and Uzbekistan were strategic partners and allies in Central Asia.

As the Speaker of the State Duma noted, last year the bilateral trade increased by 17,3%, and reached 43% in the first quarter of 2022.

Vyacheslav Volodin reminded that more than 1,8 million citizens of Uzbekistan worked in Russia, and the previous year they had sent home more than $8 billion. That was a serious contribution to both the Russian economy and the economy of Uzbekistan.

In turn, Nurdinjon Ismoilov stated that Russia and Uzbekistan had engaged in a trustful dialogue. He noted the actively developing cooperation, especially in the fields of energy, agriculture, education and science.
