Republic of Armenia Celebrates Independence Day
21 September 2023
The Declaration of Independence of Armenia was adopted at the first session of the Supreme Council of Armenia on 23 August 1990. The document abolished the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic and proclaimed the beginning of independent statehood.
By the decree of the Supreme Council of Armenia of 21 September 1991, a referendum on secession from the USSR was held. The question "Do you agree that the Republic of Armenia should be an independent democratic state outside the USSR?" was put to a nationwide vote. 94.99 % of the citizens of the Republic, who had the right to vote, voted in favour. Two days later, the Supreme Council proclaimed the Republic of Armenia an independent, autonomous state.
