Uzbek Legislators Extended Period for Nationwide Discussion on Amendments to Constitution Until 15 July

On 4 July, the ordinary plenary session of the legislative chamber of the Oliy Majlis took place. During the session, the MPs considered issue related to the nationwide discussion of the draft Constitutional Law on Amendments and Additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan Previously, the legislative chamber decided to introduce the draft for discussion from 25 June to 5 July 2022. The draft constitutional law was published in newspapers on the electronic platform «Meningkonstitutsiyam.uz».

According to the website of the legislative chamber, to explain the meaning and significance of the constitutional reform MPs and members of local Kengashi held more than 2 000 meetings with participation of 120 000 citizens. According to the press service of the chamber, more than 57 000 proposals were received. At the same time, if in the first days of the discussion about 700 proposals on the draft Constitutional Law were received per day, today, the number reaches up to 10 000 proposals per day.

“Increasing of citizens’ activity in expressing their opinions on the draft Constitutional Law, mounting the number of incoming proposals necessitates extension of the period of public discussion”, noted on the website of the legislative chamber.  

The legislative chamber decided to extend the period of nationwide discussion of the draft Constitutional Law on Amendments and Additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan” until 15 July  2022.

As noted on the chamber’s website, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, during a meeting with members of the Jokargy Kenes and representatives of the public of Karakalpakstan, noted the need to consider all the proposals.

The Committees of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis on Anti-Corruption and Judicial-Legal Issues, on Democratic Institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations and Citizens’ Self-Government Authorities in conjunction with the Constitutional Commission have been entrusted to take into account, summarize, study and analyze the proposals and opinions received during the nationwide discussion to develop proposals and implement organizational measures to make amendments and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and on their basis to continue work on the finalization of the draft Constitutional Law.

Objectives of organizational measures to explain the meaning and significance of the draft Constitutional Law to the nation and general public were defined at the meeting.
