Yerlan Koshanov Reelected Speaker of Mazhilis of Parliament of Republic of Kazakhstan
29 March 2023
On 29 March, the first session of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan of VIII convocation was opened by President of the country Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
The President pointed out the main priorities of the state are to stimulate business activity, reveal the country's industrial potential and reconsider approaches to infrastructural development.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted that as a result of the reforms, the powers of MPs were expanded and changes were made to the work of both chambers. Previously, the bill, after approval by the Mazhilis, was considered by the Senate, but now the right to adopt laws has been transferred to the Mazhilis.
The deputies of the new convocation unanimously re-elected Yerlan Koshanov as Speaker of the Majilis. He had been heading the lower chamber of Parliament since February 2022.
Albert Rau from the Amanat party and Daniya Espayeva from the Ak Zhol party were elected vice-speakers of the Majilis.
The election of the Chair of Standing Committees of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan of VIII convocation was also held. The lower chamber of Kazakhstan's Parliament has been renewed by two thirds because only 25 out of 98 MPs of the Mazhilis worked in the previous convocation.
