National flag of the Azerbaijan Republic celebrates 99th anniversary

The first three-color national flag of the Azerbaijan Republic was approved as a national symbol through a decree of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic dated 9 November 1918. It remained the symbol of Azerbaijan statehood until April 1920 when it was replaced by the flag of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic.
On 5 February 1991, the Supreme Council of the Azerbaijan Republic adopted a law on the National Flag of the Azerbaijan Republic and made the three-color flag the national flag of the Azerbaijan Republic. On 18 October 1991, the Azerbaijan Republic regained its sovereignty, declared itself the successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and took over the national symbols including the flag.
On 17 November 2009, by order of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev 9 November was declared the Day of the National Flag and became an official holiday and a day-off.
On 1st September 2010, the square of the National Flag was inaugurated in Baku, the capital of the Azerbaijan Republic. The coat of arms of the Azerbaijan and the map of the country, installed at the same square, as well as the text of the national anthem, displayed on the flagpole basement, are made of gilded bronze. On the presidential initiative the Museum of the National Flag was established at the square.
