National flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan turns 98 years

The first tricolor national flag was established as a national statehood symbol of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan on 9September 1918 and was preserved until 1920, when it was replaced by the flag of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic (ASSR).

On 5 February 1991, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan adopted the law “On national flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan” and restored the status of the tricolor flag.

On 17 November 2009, the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed an order declaring the 9th of November the Day of National Flag which became an official holiday.

On 1 September 2010, the State Flag Square was opened in Baku. The State Flag Museum was established there on the initiative of the President.
