Parliament of the Azerbaijan Republic celebrates 100th anniversary

The first in the Muslim East democratic republic – Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, as well as its parliament, was declared 100 years ago.

The celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Milli Mejlis of the Azerbaijan Republic opened with ceremonial plenary session.

President of the Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev addressed the participants of the anniversary meeting. In his program address he told about the path of Azerbaijan in order to acquire the state sovereignty, and the difficulties that the Azerbaijani people successfully overcame to fully enjoy the fruits of a democratic choice. The Head of the State reminded it was the Parliament of the Azerbaijan Republic, established in 1918, which one of the first in the Muslim world proclaimed equality of civil rights, granted the voting rights for women, and laid the foundation for the further development of a secular state. The speech also marked the historical milestones of the development of Azerbaijan and its Parliament as one of the key elements of the state structure. Mr. Ilham Aliyev stressed the important role and personal contribution of Heydar Aliyev, who ensured the irreversibility of democratic changes and the success of the political and economic development of Azerbaijan.

On 20 September the delegation of the IPA CIS held a meeting with the Chief of Staff of the Milli Mejlis of the Azerbaijan Republic Mr. Safa Mirzoev. The delegation conveyed congratulations on behalf of the IPA CIS and the IPA CIS Council Secretary General Mr. Yuriy Osipov, as well as the welcoming address of the IPA CIS.
