Valentina Matvienko Appealed to PACE President Hendrik Daems with Regard to 75th Anniversary of Victory

Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko sent the congratulation letter to PACE President Hendrik Daems and his colleagues with regard to the 75th anniversary of the Victory over Nazism, a significant contribution to which was made by the Soviet people, who heroically fought on the frontlines of the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945.

The letter refers to the reverence for the soldier-liberators and workers of the home front and respect for their dedication and courage, to which the modern generations owe their lives. The Soviet Union paid 27 million human lives for the Great Victory, and other European countries also suffered serious losses.

Nowadays some countries tend to forget the lessons of the history: Neo-Nazi political movements emerge, campaigns to distort political facts, silence the role of the Soviet Union in the Victory over the Nazism, Soviet military graves are being destroyed and desecrated. Valentina Matvienko stressed that it causes indignation and condemnation, as well as anxiety for our common future.

Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council called on her colleagues from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to support and implement the global initiative to declare the Victory over Nazism in the World War II as the global heritage of the humanity and the monuments to those who fought against it in all the countries – as the global memorial of the humankind.

“We should sustain the historical truth and contribute to the perpetuation of the great feat. Let the common Victory serve as a worthy example of the fortitude, unwavering will and resilience during the most difficult and demanding times to the present and future generations”, said Valentina Matvienko in her letter.
