Artur Chilingarov: Participation of CIS Representatives in Conference on Hydrometeorology Confirms Earth Is Our Common Home

The International Scientific and Practical Conference “Modern Problems of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring in the CIS” kicked off in the Tavricheskiy Palace. The conference was co-organized by the Russian State Hydrometeorological University and the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly.

Rector of the Russian State Hydrometeorological University Valery Mikheev addressed the participants of the conference. The welcome address on behalf of the IPA CIS Council Secretary General Dmitriy Kobitskiy was delivered by Deputy Secretary General Ivan Mushket. He noted that the activity of the IPA CIS in the field of the environmental protection was aimed at the harmonization of the ecological legislation and environmental policies and addressing cross-border challenges in the Commonwealth on the basis of the developed model documents. The IPA CIS has adopted more than 70 documents in this field, including the Model Water Management Code, the Model Environmental Code, the Model Land Management Code, the Model Forestry Code, the Model Laws on Environmental Safety, on Managing and Protecting Cross-Border Waterways (Water Bodies), on Supply of Safe Tap Water, on Environmental Disaster Areas. A number of model laws are currently under development: on Elimination of Accumulated Environmental Damage, on State Information Systems in the Field of Environment, Nature Management and Environmental Safety, on Legal Regime of Areas Affected by Radioactive Contamination.

Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for International Cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic Artur Chilingarov also greeted the participants. He particularly noted that the conference was attended by the representatives of the CIS countries. “This confirms that the Earth is our common home.” he said.

The discussion brought together the academia of the Commonwealth countries, specializing in hydrometeorology, oceanography and environmental monitoring, policy makers, public figures and representatives of regional authorities.
