Duarte Pacheco Elected New IPU President

The 206th session of the IPU Governing Council, which brought together representatives from over 145 states via videoconferencing, closed today.

The participants of the session adopted decisions on the issues related to the functioning of the IPU, in particular, regarding the budget and the work program of the organization for 2021. The election of a new IPU President was also held during the meeting.

According to the IPU website, following a secret ballot-voting, member of the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic Duarte Pacheco received an absolute majority of votes and became the new President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union for 2020-2023.

The election of the previous IPU President Gabriela Cuevas Barron took place in 2017 at the 137th IPU Assembly in the Tavricheskiy Palace, which had become a record for most parameters.
