EAEU Leaders Hold Online Summit

Heads of the EAEU Member Nations held the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council via videoconferencing. The event was attended by Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kasym-Jomart Tokaev, President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sooronbay Jeenbekov, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, as well as the head of the EAEU observer state, President of the Republic of Moldova Igor Dodon and Chair of the EEC Board Mikhail Myasnikovich.

The strategic development of the Eurasian economic integration until 2025 has become the key topic of the meeting. The heads of state also considered the priority areas of cooperation within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union, the proposal to grant the Republic of Cuba observer status at the EAEU, etc.

Opening the meeting, President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko raised the most pressing issue nowadays – the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy and population of the EAEU states. The President stressed that the long-term quarantine measures clearly proved that even superpowers do not have a margin of safety that would allow them to prevent their national economies from recession for a long time under closed borders and idle enterprises.

In his speech, Vladimir Putin noted the great importance of cooperation within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union. According to the President, the draft Strategy for Development of Economic Integration Until 2025 prepared for the meeting is aimed at the very further deepening of the multifaceted cooperation within the framework of the “five”.

In addition, Vladimir Putin recognized the importance of continuing work aimed at strengthening mutually beneficial economic cooperation of the association with interested foreign partners. “Many states and integration bodies have already established close direct contacts with the union, and the circle is constantly growing. The EAEU has international agreements with China, Vietnam, Iran, Serbia, Singapore, the negotiations with Israel and Egypt are at an advanced stage, and trade consultations with India have been launched”, recalled the President.
