Heads of CIS Foreign Policy Bodies Adopted Joint Statement on Strengthening of Role of International Law

On 18 March 2021, the Foreign Ministers of the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan adopted the Joint Statement of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Member Nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States on Strengthening the Role of International Law.

The document reaffirms that sovereign equality is one of the key principles for ensuring the stability of international relations. The ministers deemed it unacceptable for individual countries to use the measures of economic pressure or coercion against other countries and reiterate the importance of the principle of non-interference in internal affairs.

According to the press service of the CIS Executive Committee, the Statement calls for continued joint efforts on the strengthening of the existing system of agreements on disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control. Moreover, it notes the need to work together and develop the comprehensive approach to prevent and combat terrorism, express readiness to step up cooperation in the field of human rights protection.
