Inter-Parliamentary Union Held Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament

On 17-18 August 2020, the 13th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliaments – Members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union took place via videoconferencing. The event was co-organized by the IPU, the Parliament of Austria and the United Nations.

Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova Zinaida Greceanii participated in the summit. In her speech she told about the national legislative initiatives and the projects implemented in cooperation with the World Bank, the European Union and the UN Women aimed at the elimination of discrimination and enhancing financial, political and civil inclusiveness of women.

The delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan headed by Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva participated in the event for the first time. They informed the participants on the reforms in their country in the field of gender equality, which was one of the state priorities of the national policy.

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Galina Karelova also took part in the summit and greeted the participants on behalf of Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko. She told about the National Strategy of Actions for Women implemented in the Russian Federation, stressed that the economic empowerment of women should be further developed within the agenda and invited all the participants of the summit to continue the discussion during the Third Eurasian Women’s Forum in September 2021 in St. Petersburg.
