International Experts Discussed Issues of Countering Nuclear Terrorism

On 25 February 2021, the information event “Promoting Universalization and Effective Implementation of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism” took place via videoconferencing. The meeting was co-organized by the Majlisi namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism.

The event was attended by Chair of the Committee of the Majlisi namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan on Law, Order, Defense and Security Rustam Shohmurod, UN Resident Coordinator in Tajikistan Sezin Sinanoglu, MPs, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Tajikistan, representatives of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Interpol, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN Office of Legal Affairs, as well as the staff members of the IPA CIS Council Secretariat.

During the event, Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council Dmitriy Kobitskiy greeted the participants and said that the CIS MPs supported the strategic initiatives of the United Nations to counter all types of terrorist activities.

Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism Vladimir Voronkov sent a video message to the meeting participants. He also thanked the IPA CIS for support and close cooperation.

The participants discussed various aspects of international cooperation in combating the identified threat: the programs of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism on MPs and prevention of nuclear terrorism, the procedure of joining the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism, its complementarity with other conventions, as well as other related issues.
