Representatives of UNOCT Coordination Mechanism for Parliamentary Assemblies on Counter-Terrorism Summed up Interim Results of 2025

On 4 July 2025, the Seventh Meeting of the Coordination Mechanism for Parliamentary Assemblies on Counter-Terrorism was held.

The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) Programme Office on Parliamentary Engagement in Preventing and Countering Terrorism in partnership with international and regional parliamentary assemblies, as well as in cooperation with other UN entities and international organizations, is implementing the Global Programme of Parliamentary Engagement in Preventing and Countering Terrorism.

From the Secretariat of the IPA CIS Council the event was attended by Head of the Expert and Analytical Department of the IPA CIS Council Secretariat Denis Zhuk and Head of the Department for International Relations of the IPA CIS Council Secretariat, Secretary of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Political Issues and International Cooperation Maksimillian Selyutin.

The meeting of parliamentary assemblies is aimed at supporting and building the capacity of parliamentarians around the world in their efforts to combat terrorism, increasing the contribution of parliaments to the development and implementation of counter-terrorism legislation, and supporting parliaments in implementing the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and the General Assembly.

The meeting discussed the situation in the Middle East as a result of the military operation by the State of Israel against the Gaza Strip.

The results of the Mechanism’s activities for the first half of 2025 were summarized.

The participants highly appreciated the International Conference “Legislative Regulation of Measures to Counter the Use of Artificial Intelligence and Other New Technologies for Terrorist Activities”. The event was held on 17 April in St. Petersburg, organized by the IPA CIS, the UNOCT and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). It was noted that the outcome document of the conference would contribute to the development of new measures to counter international terrorism.

The meeting discussed current trends in counter-terrorism at the regional level, reviewed relevant initiatives by parliamentary assemblies, including those in partnership with the UNOCT, and exchanged work plans for the second half of 2025 for better coordination and possible joint initiatives.
