Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Azerbaijan Republic Sahiba Gafarova and Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko, participated in the events of the session of the  Eight Parliamentary Speaker’s Summit of the G-20 countries held in Indonesia on the eve of the G-20 leaders’ meeting.

Sahiba Gafarova made a report on food and energy security. The Speaker of the Milli Majlis noted that state investments, subsidies, tax exemptions for farmers and preferential loans allowed Azerbaijan to achieve a tangible increase in food production. According to her, the Milli Majlis legally supports these measures.

She also noted that energy security was the main issue on the global agenda. Sahiba Gafarova stressed that Azerbaijan fully ensures its own energy security, and occupies an important place in the system of the energy security of its partners.

Valentina Matvienko made a report on social integration, gender equality and women’s empowerment.

According to the Speaker of the Federation Council, women’s contribution to the restoration of the culture of dialogue and the search for compromises in international communication should be significantly increased today.

Valentina Matvienko stressed the impact of sanctions primarily hit the least protected categories of people, including women and children.

She proposed to hold a special study of the G20 on women and girls as victims of unilateral sanctions and expressed confidence that the same desire for harmony would be traced in the work of the G20 and the W20 during the upcoming presidency of India.
