Ilyas Umakhanov shared on the outcomes of the visit to the 134th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union

During the 389th meeting of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Vice Speaker of the Federation Council Ilyas Umakhanov informed his colleagues about the 134th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) that had taken place in Zambia in the course of the previous week. The Assembly was attended by the IPA CIS delegation.

During the Assembly IPU Governing Council granted the IPA CIS the status of associate membership at the IPU. Ilyas Umakhanov noted that "only large international institutions currently have this status".

Last October Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko met with IPU President Saber Chowdhury and IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong. The meeting took place in Geneva on the verge of the 133rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. At that meeting Valentina Matvienko voiced her request on granting the IPA CIS the associate membership.

Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council commends the work of the Inter-Parliamentary Union as one of the oldest international parliamentary organizations. "This is a reputable venue for transparent and unbiased dialogue among many countries, a venue for sharing best practices. We look forward to developing our active cooperation with the IPU".
