Nuclear-free world for future generations

The conference was convened by the Embassy of Kazakhstan. The purpose of the Conference was to discuss a broad set of issues related to nuclear safety. The Conference concluded that a nuclear-free world was the strategic mission for the Commonwealth. It also noted that so far the regime of non-proliferation is not universal and the issue of proper regulation of national nuclear programs has not been settled.

The Conference was a follow-up to the International Day of Action against Nuclear Tests, which is August 29, a date designated by the resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations. It was on this day in 1991 that the President of Kazakhstan closed down the Semipalatinskiy testing ground. The Resolution was co-sponsored by 26 countries.
