Tavricheskiy palace hosts the 5th international forum Eurasian Economic Perspective

The Tavricheskiy Palace, the headquarters of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS Member Nations, hosts the 5th international forum Eurasian Economic Perspective.

Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko sent a message for the participants and guests of the forum. It was delivered by the Acting Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council Sergey Antufiev.

“The Forum is a credible platform to address the most relevant issues of the Eurasian economic integration, including the issues of parliamentary cooperation; the Forum also provides a basis for building a common humanitarian, legal and economic space across the Eurasia”, the welcome address stated.

The Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council noted that there was a need to continue the efforts to encourage participation in the Eurasian integration, hold negotiations on free trade zones with other countries and integration bodies.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the IPA CIS, Acting Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council Sergey Antufiev presented a medal on the 25th Anniversary of the IPA CIS to the moderator of the Forum plenary session, Rector of St. Petersburg State University of Economics Igor Maksimtsev.

The head of the IPA CIS Council Secretariat also informed the participants on the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly that exercises parliamentary functions by drafting model codes, laws and other regulations to harmonize the laws of the member nations and to facilitate comprehensive integration across the CIS.

Over the years, the IPA CIS has drafted and adopted more than 500 model laws, including in the economic sphere. “In the process of drafting model laws, we actively cooperate with high-profile international experts from across the CIS, obtain a specialized expertise from the UNCITRAL, the UN Economic Commission for Europe, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development”, noted Sergey Antufiev.

In addition, he commended St. Petersburg State University of Economics for the initiative on the creation of the Board of Experts on Economy. “This decision was approved by the IPA CIS Council and we hope that the Board of Experts will be established in the nearest future and begin to function effectively”, said the IPA CIS Acting Secretary General.

Other members of the IPA CIS Council also sent their greetings to guests and participants of the conference. A welcome address by Speaker of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich was delivered by Head of the Office of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Saint Petersburg Igor Zalomai. “The forum features debates on the issues related to economy, finance and social policy. I am sure that proposals and recommendations of the forum will contribute to the comprehensive engagement of our countries, will help define visions and ways to promote integration”, he added.

Leonid Kalashnikov, Chairman, Committee of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on Commonwealth Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Outreach to Compatriotic Communities Abroad, delivered the welcome address of the Speaker of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Volodin. “The Forum provides a valued platform for the discussion of the integration issues. By bringing together all the parties concerned it contributes to addressing the challenges faced by the Eurasian community. The initiatives highlighted at the forum may help to strengthen mutually beneficial engagement in the framework of the Eurasian cooperation, to fulfill its capacity and set short-term guidelines”, he noted in his statement.

The international forum “Eurasian Economic Perspective” was established in 2013 on the initiative of the parliaments of the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation supported by MPs of the other CIS member nations. Traditionally, the forum comprises a plenary session and five roundtables.

This year the event features the following themes: “Priorities of the Eurasian Economic Union Development: Looking for Synergies and New Sources of Economic Growth”; “Greater Eurasia in Today’s Geo-Economic Landscape: is Mega-Integration Project Possible?”; “Eurasian and International Integration Law: Problems and Development Perspectives”; “Eurasian Humanitarian Cooperation: Education, Sciences and Culture”; “Youth Challenge of Eurasian Integration: Economy, Law, Education”.

The forum is attended by representatives of legislative and executive authorities of member nations of the Eurasian economic cooperation, members of the Eurasian Economic Commission Board, scientists and experts from the leading universities of the Eurasian Universities Association, economists, policy-makers and leaders of civil society and business.
