The monument to Komitas is erected in St. Petersburg

The Russian first monument to Komitas was erected in the Kamskiy Garden in St. Petersburg. Komitas was an Armenian poet, composer and choral conductor.

The opening ceremony was attended by governor of St. Petersburg Georgiy Poltavchenko, governor of Erevan Taron Margaryan, Chairperson of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg Vyacheslav Makarov, Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Igor Divinskiy, Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the Russian Federation Oleg Esayan, Deputy Secretary General of the IPA CS Council – Representative of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Ayk Chilingarya and representatives of arts, science and religion.

Komitas (real name Soghomon Soghomonian) is well-known all over the world.

He taught music in Echmiadzin school of theology, established a chorus, an orchestra of folk instruments, and made research about Armenian music.
