History of Russian Parliamentarism Discussed at XVII Scientific Conference Readings in Tavricheskiy

On 7 December, the annual scientific conference “Current Issues of Parliamentarianism: History and Modernity” (Readings in Tavricheskiy) started in the Tavricheskiy Palace - the headquarters of the IPA CIS.

The event was attended by academics from the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation - a total of more than 80 experts in the field of the history of parliamentarism.

The plenary session opened in the historic Duma Hall of the Tavricheskiy Palace. Head of the Center for the History of Parliamentarism Lidia Krokhina drew attention to the fact that the reports of the speakers was dedicated to memorable dates. The report of Ph.D. in History Evgenia Spitsina was dedicated to 180th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Petrunkevich, member of the First State Duma of the Russian Empire. Professor of the Department of Modern Russian History of St. Petersburg State University, Ph.D. in History Andrey Ivanov devoted his speech to the 145th anniversary of the birth of Vasiliy Shulgin, writer and publicist, member of the II-IV State Dumas of the Russian Empire.

The participants continued the work on the topic “Congresses of People’s Deputies in the late 80s - early 90s of the twentieth century and the fate of the USSR”, that had started at the conference “Readings in Tavricheskiy” in 2021 and continued in 2022. The same called roundtable was held this year.

The conference included sections devoted to the history of Russian and foreign parliamentarism, the activities of the State Duma of the Russian Empire, the Constituent Assembly and parliamentarism in the USSR.
