IPA CIS Observer Team Held a Number of Meeting With Participants of Electoral Process in Uzbekistan

During the second day of the short-term monitoring, the IPA CIS observers met with candidates for President of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Chair of the Executive Committee of the Uzbekistan Liberal Democratic Party Aktam Haitov informed the observers on the transformation of the political agenda, noting that the movement of entrepreneurs and business people nowadays attached great importance to reducing poverty and prioritizing human rights and freedoms.

The IPA CIS Observer Team also discussed the electoral campaign with the candidate for President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Maksuda Vorisova. She told observers about the transformations the Uzbekistan society was undergoing, including the rising of political activism, shifting attitudes towards women and family.

Chair of the Central Council of the People’s Democratic Party Ulugbek Inoyatov stressed that women constituted over 50% of the party members.

The representatives of the headquarters of the “Adolat” party, which nominated Bakhrom Abdukhalimov as a candidate for the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, outlined the fundamental differences of the current presidential elections from the previous ones. For the first time in the history of Uzbekistan, the campaign is being held under the new Electoral Code. There are more opportunities for campaigning: each candidate is given time slots on the five leading TV channels. Moreover, the financing of the electoral campaign has been increased.

The IPA CIS observers also visited the headquarters of the Ecological Party, which nominated Narzulla Oblomurodov as a candidate. Deputy Chair of the Executive Committee of the Central Council of the party Saidrasul Sanginov noted that while drafting the agenda the party studied the platforms of 97 “green” all over the world.
