IPA CIS Observers Held Meeting at Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan

The IPA CIS international observers headed by Team Coordinator, First Deputy Speaker of the Majlisi namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan Mahmadali Vatanzoda, met with the heads of a number of committees of the lower house of the parliament of Uzbekistan. The parties discussed the electoral campaign for the presidential elections in Uzbekistan, as well as inter-parliamentary interaction within the framework of the IPA CIS.

The Chairs of the committees of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan welcomed the international observers and noted the importance of international observation for the development of democracy, ensuring electoral rights and freedoms of citizens and expressed gratitude to the observers for their participation in the event. They also noted the key role of the Interparliamentary Assembly and the capacities and experience of the specialized International Institute for Monitoring the Democracy Development, Parliamentarianism and Suffrage Protection of Citizens of IPA CIS Member Nations (IPA CIS IIMDD).

The parliamentarians highly appreciated the activities of the Assembly in the field of model law-making, including the regulation of electoral processes, which was used in the drafting of the new Electoral Code of Uzbekistan.

Team Coordinator Mahmadali Vatanzoda informed the MPs about the results of the long-term monitoring of the presidential elections in the Republic of Uzbekistan conducted by the IPA CIS IIMDD expert group. According to experts, the electoral legislation of the Republic of Uzbekistan complies with international standards for democratic elections.

The Head of the Observer Team informed the heads of the committees about the group composition, the progress of the long-term monitoring and the observers’ schedule on election day.

IPA CIS Council Secretary General Dmitriy Kobitskiy spoke about the monitoring at the presidential elections in Uzbekistan abroad. He noted that monitoring data from foreign polling stations would be taken into account when preparing the observers’ conclusion. The document will be widely available and sent for review to international partner organizations.

The Secretary General invited the MPs of the Legislative Chamber to the IPA CIS autumn session to be held on 25-26 November.
