Armen Sarkissian was elected the new President of the Republic of Armenia

On 2 March 2018 the presidential elections took place in the Republic of Armenia. For the first time the President was elected by the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.
The only candidate standing for the elections was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Armen Sarkissian. He was also the Prime Minister of the country in 1996-1997. Armen Sarkissian was nominated for the post of President by the ruling Republican Party. 90 deputies voted in favor of his nominations, with 10 votes against and one ballot declared invalid.
The elections became the next stage of the constitutional reform launched in 2015. According to the new version of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, the President is elected for seven years and can serve only one term.
