CIS MPs Discussed a Number of Major International Conferences to Be Held in 2021–2022

Today, a meeting of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Political Issues and International Cooperation was held in the Tavricheskiy Palace – the IPA CIS headquarters.

The event was attended by MPs from the Azerbaijan Republic, the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The meeting began with an organizational issue: Chair of the Committee of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan on International Affairs, Defense and Security Aigul Kuspan was elected Chair of the Commission; Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia on Foreign Relations Ruben Rubinyan, Deputy Chairperson of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly Republic of Belarus on International Affairs Tengiz Dumbadze and Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Konstantin Kosachev were elected Deputy Chairs.

Tengiz Dumbadze spoke about the international parliamentary conference “Global Challenges and Threats in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Terrorism and Violent Extremism” and presented the Concept of the Presidency of the Republic of Belarus in the Commonwealth of Independent States in 2021.

Then, the representatives of the Republic of Tajikistan informed the members of the Commission on the outcomes of the conference on Promoting Universalization and Effective Implementation of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT) organized by the UN Counter-Terrorism Office in cooperation with the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan.

Konstantin Kosachev delivered a report on the preparation for the World Conference on nter-Ethnic and Inter-Religious Dialogue, scheduled to be held by the Inter-Parliamentary Union with the support and under the auspices of the UN in Russia in May 2022. He recalled that the initiative to organize such an event came from Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko and was first announced at the 137th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The Commission also analyzed the outcomes of the sessions of international parliamentary organizations (the PACE, the OSCE PA) and coordination of actions of parliamentary delegations of the CIS Member Nations in the work of these organizations. Chairman of the Committee of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky and Chairman of the Committee of the Majlisi namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan on International Affairs, Public Associations and Information Saidmurod Fattokhzoda delivered reports on the issue.
