UN Virtual Counter-Terrorism Week Launched

The Virtual Counter-Terrorism Week, organized by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, began its work on 6 July 2020. The event is held under the overall theme “Strategic and Practical Challenges of Countering Terrorism in a Global Pandemic Environment”.

Secretary of the Joint Commission at the IPA CIS for the Harmonization of National Laws Related to Security, Countering Emerging Threats and Challenges Stanislav Korostelyov and Secretary of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Political Issues and International Cooperation Maksimillian Selyutin represented the IPA CIS Council Secretariat as observers at this event.

Under Secretary General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism Vladimir Voronkov moderated the webinar.

Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell and President of the Council on Foreign Relations Richard Haass delivered welcome messages.

High-level representatives drew attention to the problems caused by COVID-19 pandemic, which could exacerbate the existing protracted conflicts and lead to new terrorist trends and threats.

Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Vladimir Norov noted that the principles that were voiced at the Conference on Countering International Terrorism, held at the IPA CIS headquarters in St. Petersburg in 2019, are still relevant today.
