IPA CIS Representatives Participate in CIS Expert Advisory Board on Diabetes

A meeting of the CIS Expert Advisory Board on Diabetes took place in the CIS Executive Committee in Minsk (the Republic of Belarus) via videoconferencing.

The event brought together staff members of medical centers and research institutes from the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan, as well as representatives of the CIS Executive Committee and the WHO Regional Office for Europe. Secretary of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Social Policy and Human Rights, Executive Secretary of the IPA CIS Expert Advisory Board on Public Health Evgenia Vladimirova and member of the IPA CIS Expert Advisory Board on Public Health, Deputy Chair of Russian Diabetes Federation, Chairperson of St. Petersburg Diabetes Society Marina Shipulina represented the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly at the meeting.

The analysis of strategic indicators on diabetes in the CIS collected by the experts was one of the key issues on the event’s agenda. The data represents the staff availability of endocrinologists in the CIS, the incidence of type I and II diabetes across the Commonwealth, the number of patients receiving insulin therapy, the diabetes mortality rates, etc.

According to Secretary of the CIS Expert Advisory Board on Diabetes Olga Salko, the review of relevant statistics will help members of the Expert Council better coordinate their efforts. Besides, the further analysis of strategic indicators will allow to track the effectiveness of the 2021–2025 CIS Cooperation Program for Prevention and Treatment of Diabetes.

On behalf of the IPA CIS Council Secretariat Evgenia Vladimirova expressed the readiness to join the project.

Marina Shipulina supported her colleague, noting that the WHO innovative instruments and the CIS time-tested legislative framework would allow to elaborate a quality program for the upcoming years.

The members of the Expert Advisory Board discussed in detail the proposals and comments from the WHO Regional Office for Europe. In particular, European experts advised supplementing the project with measures to prevent diabetes, including the fight against obesity.

In addition, the members of the Expert Advisory Board drew the outcomes of the XXIX meeting of the CIS Advisory Board on Cooperation in the Field of Public Health and considered the issues related to the preparation of the upcoming meeting of the Advisory Board , were briefed on the experience of general practitioners in managing patients with diabetes in the Kyrgyz Republic, etc.
