Meeting of IPA CIS PC on Political Issues and International Cooperation

This time the regular meeting brought together the members of the Commission and international guests – President Emeritus of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, Head of Italian Delegation to PAM Francesco Maria Amoruso and PAM Secretary General Sergio Piazzi. At the meeting, PAM Secretary General presented a report on the contribution of national parliaments in implementing UN Security Council resolutions on combating terrorism. Besides, the Commission was briefed on the Interparliamentary Conference on Combating Terrorism to be held in March 2017 and co-organized by IPA CIS and OSCE PA.

After discussing a few housekeeping issues, important political developments in the region, the activities dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the CIS and measures to implement the Decision on the Adaptation of the CIS to New Realities adopted this September, the Commission focused on the outcomes of the recent IPA CIS monitoring efforts at elections and referenda across the Commonwealth.

The meeting also featured a discussion of the 135 IPU Assembly held in Geneva on 23-27 October. Chair of the Committee of the Federation Council on International Affairs informed the colleagues on the results of the 135 session. He also told the Commission members that a decision to host the 137IPU Assembly in St. Petersburg in autumn 2017 had been taken in the margins of the 135th session. He also spoke on the expert hearings on the draft resolution the Role of Parliaments in Preventing Outside Interference in the Internal Affairs of Sovereign States proposed by the Russian delegation at the 134 Assembly in Lusaka.

The participants made a special focus on the Draft Statement of the IPA CIS Council on Preventing Justification of Nazism and Denigrating the Legacy of Anti-Hitler Coalition Fighters. They decided to further work on the text of the Statement.

Discussions about the prospects of common work with the PA CE Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy was also on the agenda.
