Commonwealth Countries Celebrate Victory Day in Great Patriotic War

Celebrations dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 are taking place across the Commonwealth countries.

The holiday is called in different ways: in the Republic of Azerbaijan ― the Day of Victory over Fascism, in the Republic of Armenia ― the Day of Victory and Peace, in the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation ― Victory Day, in the Republic of Tajikistan ― Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War, in Turkmenistan ― Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War of 1941 – 1945. The Republic of Uzbekistan celebrates the Day of Remembrance and Honors.

Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council Dmitriy Kobitskiy congratulated the citizens of the CIS countries on the holiday and noted that that day payed tribute to all those who made an invaluable contribution to the Great Victory.

“We remember our ancestors who heroically fell in the battles for freedom, medical workers who carried the wounded out under a barrage of fire, home front workers who achieved the seemingly impossible things to bring the Victory closer. We cherish the memory of those who shared their shelter and bread with the evacuated, who bore on their shoulders all the hardships of the terrible war, who even in fascist dungeons believed that good would inevitably prevail over evil. This day will always be in our hearts as a symbol of the unity of peoples in the name of a happy and bright future,” the message of greetings reads.
