IPA CIS Speakers of Parliaments Held a Series of Bilateral Meetings

On 21-21 November, the Tavricheskiy Palace provided a venue for a series of bilateral meetings, which enabled the Heads of the IPA CIS parliamentary delegations to discuss the perspectives of further cooperation.

On 21 November, Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko met her colleagues from the Azerbaijan Republic, the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Uzbekistan.

During the meeting with Speaker of the Milli Mejlis of the Azerbaijan Republic Ogtay Asadov, Valentina Matvienko noted the dynamic development between Russia and Azerbaijan, including the parliamentary cooperation. Ogtay Asadov stressed the need to enhance regional and parliamentary engagement.

At the meeting with Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan, Valentina Matvienko noted the active dialogue of the two countries both on the highest level and within parliamentary cooperation, in bilateral format and within the Eurasian Economic Union. Ararat Mirzoyan highlighted that the relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia are strategic in nature and based on partnership.

During the meeting with Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova Zinaida Greceanii, Valentina Matvienko noted that the Republic of Moldova had a tremendous potential for economic development. Zinaida Greceanii indicated the need for enhanced bilateral cooperation, including within the framework of the IPA CIS and other international parliamentary organizations.

The meeting of Valentina Matvienko with Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva also referred to issues of inter-parliamentary cooperation. Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council informed that the Observer Team from the IPA CIS would come to Tashkent to monitor the parliamentary elections scheduled for December. Tanzila Narbaeva noted that the parliamentary cooperation between Russian and Uzbekistan gained momentum and proposed to enhance the engagement through relevant committees of the two countries. She also announced her intention to participate in the Third Eurasian Women’s Forum, which will be held in 2021.

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Ilyas Umakhanov, Chair of the Committee of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on International Affairs Konstantin Kosachev, First Deputy Chair of the Committee of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on International Affairs Vladimir Dzhabarov and IPA CIS Council Secretary General Dmitriy Kobitskiy took part in the bilateral meetings.

On the margins of the autumn session of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, a series of other bilateral meetings took place: between Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva and Speaker of the Milli Mejlis of the Azerbaijan Republic Ogtay Asadov, between Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva and Speaker of the Majilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurlan Nigmatulin, and between Speaker of the Majilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurlan Nigmatulin and Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova Zinaida Greceanii.
