Valentina Matvienko took part in a multilateral meeting with the IPU Chairperson and leadership

The Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko took part in the multilateral meeting with the IPU President and the leadership.

The event was held in Geneva (Switzerland) and was dedicated to the 130^th anniversary of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the International day of Parliamentarism celebrated on 30 June.

Remember that initially the proposal to establish an International Day of Parliamentarism, established by a resolution of the UN General Assembly, was put forward by Russian parliamentarians in St. Petersburg during the 137^th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. "The introduction of International Day of Parliamentarism in the calendar is a tribute to the institution of parliamentarism as the main democratic institution," Valentina Matvienko said. She also highlighted that the meeting at the headquarters of the oldest international parliamentary organization was a good reason for a dialogue about the ways of its development and the Inter-Parliamentary Union played a very important role in the development of parliamentarism, helped to develop the tradition of parliamentary diplomacy. According to Valentina Matvienko, it is necessary to develop the organization, to involve all national delegations in active work on counteraction to threats and moreover she noted that the parliamentary dialogue was more in demand than ever in our difficult international situation.

Valentina Matvienko supported the position of the IPU leadership about the necessity for more frequent activities of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, not only at the IPU headquarters, but also in the Member States of the organization.

The meeting was also attended by the IPU President Gabriela Cuevas Barron, the IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong, the Speaker of the Advisory Council of the State of Qatar Ahmed Ben Abdullah Al Mahmoud and the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic, as well as representatives of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.
